We are back with Season 5 of the KATHMANDU COAST TO COAST Podcast.

There have been some questions about the Kathmandu Coast to Coast event. To answer these, we have a Q&A with Race Director, Glen Currie.

Glen discusses various topics including a race recap from the 2023 event, an explanation of how the ballot system worked this year and why it was used, and the current state of multisport in New Zealand and the challenges it faces.

Are you a newbie to the event and feeling a little overwhelmed? Don't worry, we've got you covered too. Team CP will also provide some insights into what you need to know to participate in the event for the first time.

RACHEL BAKER

– CP ATHLETE

CP Superstar, Rachel Baker, has shared with us her thoughts on why she LOVES adventure racing. Thanks Rach!

The weeks have flown by since One NZ GODZone Chapter 11, making it a distant memory already.
I have struggled to sum it so here are a few reasons why I love adventure racing and what I enjoyed or didn’t while out there.
1. You visit some amazing places you might have not otherwise. The Takitimu Mountains were epic.
2. Fun & fantastic teammates you get to hang out with. Thanks @martinpeat, @meyer.2023 and Dean!
3. Working together as a team to conquer the mystery course where you never know what might happen.
4. You get to be outside all week and sleep in interesting places.
5. Pushing yourself mentally and physically to your limits. There is always going to be suffering at points, it just needs to embraced as part of the adventure. There were points for all of us but we supported each other an got through them.
6. There strategy and skill involved which makes things interesting.
7. Overall Adventure Racing is fun otherwise why would we do it?
We couldn’t have had this adventure without our amazing support crew of Mum, Kate, Blake and Mason. Thank you!
Thanks @gearshopnz for supporting us!
Thanks James, @ric.greer, @kimvargo, for supporting me with my crazy goals.

SIGNATURE HOMES

– CP PARTNER

Together, with SIGNATURE HOMES, we were proud to be able to bring you the 𝗦𝗜𝗚𝗡𝗔𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗘 𝗛𝗢𝗠𝗘𝗦 ‘𝗘𝗠𝗘𝗥𝗚𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗔𝗧𝗛𝗟𝗘𝗧𝗘 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗚𝗥𝗔𝗠𝗠𝗘’ for the first time in 2022.
The Signature Homes Emerging Athlete Programme’ called for young athletes to apply or be nominated for the ‘Build Your Future Programme,’ which would help a young athlete develop and progress their potential within endurance sport.
Team CP & Signature Homes, together, supported the building of foundations for an emerging athlete to reach their goals with 12 months of coaching, support and educational content during 2022.

LEXIE SINCLAIR

– CP ATHLETE

The 2022 recipient was Lexie Sinclair. Below is Lexie’s year as the first 𝗦𝗜𝗚𝗡𝗔𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗘 𝗛𝗢𝗠𝗘𝗦 ‘𝗘𝗠𝗘𝗥𝗚𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗔𝗧𝗛𝗟𝗘𝗧𝗘’

The emerging athlete award helped me prepare for the multisport championships, The Kathmandu Coast to Coast, by providing a Nutritionist, Strength Coach and Multisport Coach. This was a massive help for me and guided me in the right direction to be fully prepared, confident to have a good race and be happy with my result. This Award also gave be the capability to attend the CP Squad missions in 2022.I really enjoyed the day out exploring and gaining some vertical meters in the snow as well!  It was nice to meet and greet other fellow Team CP athletes and hear their training journeys.

I have been a part of the team CP Community since the age of 13. I have been involved in the CP support crew for athletes competing in the Kathmandu Coast to Coast. I have many memories over the three years I helped, two memories that stuck with me the most was waking up at 3am to scrutineer the kayaks and then eating a bacon butty, and the other one would have to be when Jake Vargo but petrol in his diesel Ute towing the kayak trailer. we did break down!

I have known Richard Greer for about 6 years now, he has been my coach for 2 years starting in 2021 and has been amazing to work with. He is really supportive, especially when I was going through a few health issues  – post Covid having trouble with my chest and heart. I also struggled with sorting my medication for my epilepsy so had to work around these issues. These happened early of 2022 and took a few months to rest and recover. Few months later Richard and I started to put a training plan together, I was absolutely buzzing and ready to start training again for the 2022 Kathmandu Coast to Coast.

During my year as an the Signature Homes Emerging Athlete, I also received Strength Coaching from CP Strength Coach, Kim Vargo. Kim is extremely knowledgeable about strength and conditioning, knowing about injuries and ways to support them. She helped me become stronger for each discipline and I definitely noticed a difference during the training and during the race. Her workout’s definitely left me sore the next day, even a couple of days! Really appreciated having her as my strength coach and it was really nice to be coached by her!

CP Dietitian Cushla Jackson was a pleasure to work with, her understanding of Nutrition is inspiring and was beyond helpful for training and races. We spoke about many things that could improve my everyday nutrition and race nutrition, I learnt so much while working with her. This was extremely helpful and I will definitely take away what I learnt and continue to improve.

I would like to say a massive thank you to Signature Homes for opening this opportunity to help support young Athletes to help with future races. I am truly grateful for receiving this award, what an awesome experience it was!

Mike Phillips –

We kick off the show tonight with the newly crowned New Zealand Ironman Champion – Mike Phillips. Mike went head-to-head all day with previous champion Braden Currie to finally pull away over the last part of run and to win by 3 minutes. We look forward to catching up with Mike to hear the inside word about his day unfolded, as well as find out about his preparation and nutrition.

Brian Ashby –

Brian Ashby was working behind the microphone this weekend rather than toeing the start line so had a different perspective on the day both in the elite race but also supporting age group athletes across the line. We look forward to Brian’s insights on the event and also his training and racing tips for those looking at taking on this challenge in the future.

Megan Parr –

Megan completed her first Ironman over the weekend putting in a massive effort to cross the finish line 15 minutes prior to the cut off. As amazing as it is to hear how the elite’s blast around the course the mental fortitude to keep on moving forward to complete the course is next level.

Richard Greer –

Backing up from Coast to Coast 3 weeks ago Richard had a crack at doing the double. With Ironman specific training kept to a minimum we look forward to finding out how his day went and what were the key learnings after making it to the finish line on Saturday.

NICOLE LOVEGROVE

– CP ATHLETE

Over the past 2 years Nicole has spent time with TEAM CP training towards her goal of a half IRONMAN. And hit her goal she did!

Nicole competed at SUFFEREST in December, crossing the finish line as the first female and then backing that up with her big goal of Half IRONMAN, which she completed this year at IRONMAORI – 2nd in her age group and 6th overall. So good. Congratulations on your achievements Nicole.

Nicole says over the last 2 years with Team CP, coached by James and Fiona, she has learnt so much about herself and triathlons, which has been invaluable. James & Fiona helped her achieve her goals while recovering from RED-S, which Nicole says she would not have been able to overcome without them.

At TEAM CP we love celebrating alongside you, championing you in your journey and seeing you reach your goals.

You put the TEAM into TEAM CP.
