Hi, Grant here- long time listener, first time caller….
I am excited to be joining Team CP, in what is my first official coaching role- I have over the years dished out lots of advice, not all of it asked for.
I was pretty motivated by running and athletics in my teenage years and was somewhat competitive in middle distance- highlight being a SI Sec School 800m title. My 20’s I was very focused on skiing and backcountry skiing in particular. This quickly lead to me racing in Ski Mountaineering races in North America and Europe, where I took part in the 2008 World Ski Mountaineering Champs and the Perria Menta (think TdF of ski mountaineering races).
Motivated to keep fit over summer lead me back to running, which escalated in the form of trail and ultra running. Over the following 12 years I raced a range of distances in New Zealand and overseas, highlights being 1st place Routeburn Classic, Avalanche Peak, 2015 Aust/NZ Sky Running series, 125km Canadian Death Race, Mt Difficulty; podium places in Tarawera 100km and 100miler, Northburn 100miler, Ultra Easy 100km (x3) ; top 10 – Ultra Trail Australia 100km (x3), Hong Kong 100k, Hardrock 100mile.
Over the last 3 years I finally gave into my own curiosity of bike-packing and went down that rabbit hole. This has led me to discovering and really enjoying all forms of biking. The most enjoyable of all has been doing this with my family and we have been on some great multiday bikepacking adventures together, as well as doing CX and XC races. Thru all the different sports I have competed in, the training principles have all remained same.
I am big believer “less is more”, “quality over quantity” and specificity to the race or event you are training for.
